Spiritual Growth

As a church school, we want all our children, whether they have a particular faith or none at all, to be able to recognise spiritual moments in their own lives and those of others. We use three 'lenses' to help children to understand how they encounter spirituality:

  • Wows: Breath-taking, wonderful, and joyful positive events.
  • Ows: Challenging, painful, or uncomfortable events that test our comfort and disrupt daily life.
  • Nows: Moments of stillness, quiet pauses, prayer, or the ordinariness of everyday life.

Each class has a set of books in which children can record moments in class and in their lives where they experience these things.

Introducing these concepts to young children is challenging. We started with wows as these were the easiest for children to relate to, as time has gone on, children are more aware of 'ows'

We have worked to improve children's literacy of what might be considered a wow, during the last year we have taken this as a theme for one of our weekly collective worships. In these we have shared to things which people might consider to be a wow, the children have then voted with their eyes closed which thing they have found most spirtitual. Themes have included man made places of wonder around the world, natural wonder of plants and animals and very human moments such as reunions, births, first steps. Each class is given pictures from these collective worships to add to their 'ow, wow and now' books and write about their feelings and responses.
